Fast Thermal Tune

The Fast Thermal Tune feature uses the thermal vibration of the cantilever to help the user select the correct resonant peak when the standard Cantilever Tune produces multiple peaks. This is most useful in fluid environments where multiple peaks are common.

NOTE: Fast Thermal Tune does not allow spring constant calibration. For information, see Spring Constant Calibration.

The NanoScope 8.15 software uses the 6.25 MHz High Speed Data Capture function to capture 200 ms of cantilever deflection data with the Tapping drive amplitude set to 0. It then performs a Fast Fourier Transform to display an amplitude vs. frequency plot with the amplitude data scaled to fit the cantilever tune data. This is the Fast Thermal Tune output, which will be visible as a red trace in the Tune Cantilever panel of the Setup view. To view the Fast Thermal Tune in the Setup view, click the Auto Tune button.

Fast Thermal is also accessible through the Cantilever Tune window. There are several ways to access the Cantilever Tune window:

  • In the Tune Cantilever panel of the Setup view, click the Manual Tune button.

  • Go to Microscope > Cantilever Tune... in the menu bar.

Fast Thermal Tune Procedure:

In the Cantilever Tune window, click the Fast Thermal Tune button:

The system will temporarily turn off the tapping drive, capture high speed data on the cantilever deflection, and perform an FFT analysis of the data. The result is immediately plotted on the tune curve::

The fast thermal tune plot will persist until you exit the tune dialog or click on the fast thermal tune button again.
